THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE ZINES

When a colleague of mine recently asked what my dream job was, I replied with the same blanket answer I always roll out when talking to someone who doesn’t know their Dazed from their Pick Me Up – ‘journalism.’ I got the same predictable response I always do, which invariably starts with the words ‘dying trade’ and ends with the recommendation that I look into a more ‘safe’ job like teaching.
I usually smile, nod and try not to stab them with the nearest sharp object. If I’m feeling particularly energetic, I’ll mutter some response about how people will always want to learn about music, art, culture and news some way or another. The thing I don’t, but often wish I could say is; “actually, did you know there’s a whole sub-culture bubbling up from the people who’ve been forced to make things work for themselves? There’s a DIY culture emerging from my generation reminiscent of decades ago, when people first rebelled from the big shiny corporations, the family fiat and the house with the white picket fence surrounding it, and it is BLOODY EXCITING.”
I don’t say it, because a) I’d get nothing more than a bemused look in return and b) I feel like this female-led DIY culture is something sacred. The podcasts, zines and web shows made by 3 girls in their pokey little London flat are symbols that even in a (let’s be honest), kind of shitty time, people of our age are still managing to make things happen. Good things happen. Cool things happen. And they’re not waiting for anyone else’s permission to do it. Why wait for the approval of an Editor when you can print that think piece yourself?  It’s exciting, and proof that no matter what happens, the journalism industry will survive – it just might have a DIY makeover.
The below zines are all created by artists, creators, and importantly – kick ass women with a vision. They’re full to the brim with fresh ideas and conversation, and THANK HEAVENS ABOVE - there’s no clickbait in sight.

 Sister Magazine
Sister Magazine is a bi-annual feminist publication, and its creators believe that all issues are women’s issues. Preach. The zine was created by Beccy Hill in her third year of University, and is now on its 6th issue. You can grab the latest copy, ‘The Strong Issue,’ here.

Girls Club
Georgia Murray created Girls Club as part of her MA Final Project, and it’s been rolling on ever since. This zine is full of poetry, creative writing, illustrations and think pieces – and it’s the first zine I bought. Recently joining Georgia is Deputy Ed Aimee-Lee Abraham, and the girls are now preparing for the release of their fourth issue (included in which there’s a little something from yours truly). Pre-order here.

Grrrl In Print
An offshoot from the brilliant Grrrl Zine Fair, a not for profit organisation which hosts workshops, gigs, zine fairs and all sorts, In Print is their first DIY zine with contributions from bands, artists and other zines. Grrrl Zine Fair is such a cool idea, and I love the fact they pride themselves on inclusivity. Zine happiness for all here.

Sunday Girl
The brainchild of Abby Dennison, Sunday Girl is a zine I stumbled across randomly this year when browsing in a newsagents in London on my lunch hour. I was enticed by its claim to be “an independent fashion magazine for intellectual, creative and ambitious girls,” and bought and read the whole copy within about 40 minutes. One of my fave zines, the content is relatable, interesting and SO beautifully presented. Grab Issue 4 here.

Hope you enjoy reading these zines as much as I do, and let me know which ones you like too.

LONDON CALLING

I’ll let you into a secret.

I love Autumn. I love icy winds. I love sitting inside and hearing torrents of rain running off the awning of a coffee shop. I love walking home after work with a quickened pace, hands shoved deep into woollen coat pockets. Summer is sticky, hot, and sweat-inducing. Autumn is like the cooler older sibling you’re outwardly resentful of, when deep down, you’re fascinated by their every move.

Every year, I find myself joining in with the majority of the public and ranting about the quick turnaround of our good old British weather system. Handing over change at a shop till, riding a lift up a few floors - the conversations are all the same. “Eugh, where did summer go?” “Bloody hell it’s a bit frosty isn’t it, I practically had my barbeque out a few days ago” – you get the gist. Moaning about the shit weather is an act of camaraderie. Truth is though, I just don't agree.

I get the arguments against it, I really do. Having to go outside for a cigarette at 8pm with the wind whipping against your cheeks is punishment enough for smoking. Not being able to nip to the corner shop without at least 7 layers and visions of Rose from Titanic balancing perilously close to her icy grave can be a bit of a buzzkill. Regardless, I just can’t get enough of crunchy leaves, being swaddled in a scarf and the feeling of pure unadulterated joy when someone offers you a cup of hot tea.

Polo neck – Zara | Flared trousers – Zara | Shoes – Nike Air Force I | Coat – Missguided | Earrings – Topshop

This outfit, for me, is the perfect autumnal choice. This camel coloured Zara polo neck is a recent purchase, and so comfy that I fear it might have to be surgically removed from my body. Part of the same shopping spree, these flared black trousers are the perfect mix of pizzazz and comfort, and my trusty Missguided long line black coat is an actual lifesaver. It goes with everything and it feels like a blanket – what more could I possibly need?

As you may or may not know, I’m currently gallivanting around London. I’m here for a month as an Editorial Intern at Esquire magazine, and so far I’m loving it. My bank balance has substantially depleted since my arrival, but my happiness levels are on the up. The fact that there is ALWAYS something interesting to do in London is such a bonus. I’ve already found myself drinking a little too much and eating out a little too often, but I’m having a merry old time, so who cares?

PRETTY IN PINK

In a dramatic change from my usual monochrome, I’ve actually managed to incorporate a teensy bit of colour into my sartorial palette. This dusky pink hue is a blogger favourite at the minute and apparently a big fashion yes,  although realistically I probably chose it because it’s the closest thing to skin colour and perfect for a play-it-safe goth like me. The lace up top is a recent find from the Missguided sale, and the stripy black and white culottes are a pyjama-like dream offered up by good old Dorothy Perkins. As usual, recently I’ve been wearing my Nike Air Force 1’s to the absolute death - they are truly the most comfortable trainers known to man.

As you may have noticed, my hair is a little bit different. Just before my recent graduation I decided to fully embrace my inner old lady - chopping it up and dyeing it an ashy shade of grey (yes I know, future me is going to kick the fuck off when I have to show my kids the graduation pictures). I believe my dad referred to this change in hairstyle as a ‘quarter life crisis,’ although I prefer to see it as a Fashion Conscious Movement. Much more catchy.
Top – Missguided (Sale) | Culottes – Dorothy Perkins | Trainers – Nike Air Force 1’s | Backpack – Savida | Choker – Urban Outfitters

Anyway, as I mentioned, I’ve recently graduated University and after the best three years of my life I am armed with a 2:1, more memories than you can shake a stick at and a healthy sense of panic and impending doom. Seriously, the graduate fear is real. Anyone got a manual?

More soon,

CULOTTES UP?

Jumper – Missguided | Culottes – Topshop | Trainers – Nike Air Force 1 | Bag – Cambridge Satchel Company

Hello hello hello. It’s been a while, AGAIN. When will I ever get the hang of regular posting?
Not a lot has gone on in my life since I last posted. I had a lovelyyy trip to Budapest with 30 pals from university in March, and it was wild to say the least. I arrived back in London 5 days later minus a phone charger, plus a very sore head, with a lifetime’s worth of hilarious anecdotes tucked safely inside my rucky. Apart from that, I’ve just been making the most of my LAST EVER TERM at university. How this has come about quite so suddenly I’m really not sure. It is maybe the biggest cliché going, but time really does fly when you’re having fun. I’ve had some of the best days of my life at Newcastle uni, and although I am looking forward to exciting things like a new location, a new job (hire me please) and new adventures, I’m just not quite ready to give up student life. Luckily for me, I’ve still got a 10,000 word dissertation to write. (Sadly you can’t hear me but I’m groaning as I type this.)

As a bit of an essay avoidance technique, I decided to blow my last ever instalment of student loan on a few fancy goods, some of which you see before you now. The jumper was an absolutely fab steal from Missguided and is so light, perfect for summer. The trainers are Nike Air Force 1’s, which I’ve wanted for ages but just not been able to afford. (FYI, these are the boys kids version. Luckily I’m a size 5.5 UK so I can get away with these babies for £20 cheaper.)

Many days from now until the end of May will be spent slaving away in the library, so if you have any good blog posts, youtube videos or basically any form of procrastination you can offer me, feel free to leave links down below or tweet me @saramacauley_ - I’d love to hear from you.

ALRIGHT BLONDIE?

Jacket – Members Only | Top – Topshop | Dungarees – Boohoo | Boots – Zara | Backpack – Savida | Rings – Camden/Brandy Melville

Hello, it’s been bloody ages

First things first, as you may notice I’ve had a slight change of hair colour. By slight change, I mean I’ve bleached it to death. The change came about one evening after too much scrolling through the Bleach London hair tag on Tumblr, when I asked (forced) my friend to grab a packet of bleach, a bottle of peroxide and with a healthy dose of fear, made her apply it to my head. The end result was not what you see before you, but a nice mix of yellow and brown more akin to Eminem than any Bleach London model. Thankfully, the salon next door had an appointment at 9am the next day and my hair is finally white/blonde!

Anyway, I’m back to my blogging ways and took these little outfit snaps in Notting Hill with my good pal Amy. We had an absolute blast strolling round the markets there, the area is so beautiful. Please excuse the slightly dodge posing and facial expressions, it’s been a while. These dungarees are an absolute steal from Boohoo at around £25, and they definitely came to my rescue during my internship with The Debrief when I was in a bit of a rush getting ready in the dark at 7am. Dungarees instantly make any ensemble below look slightly less thrown-together, and I’m pretty much living in them these days.

In other news, I’m back home in Northern Ireland now and while I had the absolute BEST time in London, I’m so excited to be fed and watered by my family. London really ain’t cheap. I’ve got plenty of time to catch up on blogs now, so please leave your links below and I’ll have a nosey!

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

Polo – H&M Sale, Pool Sliders – Topshop Sale
Swimsuit – Batoko
Shorts – H&M Sale, Choker – La Moda, Shoes – Local Boutique
Pineapple Ornament – TK Maxx, Books – Urban Outfitters, Plants and Candles - IKEA

For a girl that has no money I seem to have acquired a considerable amount of new bits and pieces over the last few weeks. I’m actually going to Thailand for 3 weeks at the end of August and although I’ve been working full time over summer, all my pennies are being saved for my hols. I am BEYOND excited to visit Thailand and going with 4 of my best gals from Uni will undoubtedly make the experience even more amazing. Included in this post are a few of the lovely items I’ve bought to bring with me, as well as a few other pieces I just couldn’t resist.

I’m particularly proud of my sale shopping skillz this year; I managed to nab these Topshop snakeprint pool sliders for £7, the H&M white polo neck for £5 and the H&M shorts for a fiver as well. Whaaat a bloody bargain. I’d seriously recommend nipping to H&M at the minute and having a rummage through the sale racks, there are some serious beauties to be purchased. Also making me happy this week are my new homeware bits from TK Maxx and IKEA – this pineapple ornament was an absolute steal at £3 and the baby plants make me want to weep with joy.

In other news, you may have noticed my blog has undergone a somewhat major make-over. In a conscious bid to start writing more, I decided I needed to invest in my future and get a proper professional to help a sister out with my blog template. This lovely one was designed and installed by Pipdig, and I seriously cannot recommend them highly enough. Their blog templates are reasonably priced for what you’re getting, they offer free installation within 48hours and their aftercare is fantastic – I had a few niggling questions I needed to ask and their response was so informative and helpful (and this isn’t even a sponsored post, they are just THAT fantastic.)

Hope you’re well and if you have any comments on the new blog style do let me know!

LIBRARY ATTIRE

Top – Primark | Jeans – Topshop | Coat – Primark | Shoes – Nike | Trainers – Pressie

SOS - I’m in the midst of essay hell. With about 4 deadlines to hand in within a 2 week time period, I’m sure you can imagine the scene surrounding me right now - printed pages of journal articles have replaced my copies of ‘Glamour,’ my usual gig watching/bar dwelling/topshop drooling has been replaced by 24/7 library sessions and Google Scholar has replaced ‘The Debrief’ on my list of recent searches. There is no way to sugar coat the overwhelming wave of stress and panic overrunning my life as we move closer and closer to deadline day, but for the purpose of not dragging you all down with me, this little post will focus on my sartorial choices rather than my impounding sense of doom.

The libes calls for smart dressing – the kind that says ‘I’m not wearing pyjamas’ but still gives a nod to the utter despair you’re currently experiencing  in order to blend in with your fellow stressed out students and avoid the look of the carefree first year. I’ve gone for my trusty black skinnies and a pair of comfy trainers, but added a smarter camel coat on top to ward off the funeral director vibes, and a backpack which screams I AM WORKING – HONEST. LOOK! I HAVE BOOKS IN HERE! MAYBE A COPY OF COSMO BUT ALSO SOME BOOKS! and tricks even myself into thinking I’ve got my life sorted.

If you’re living in the library too, know that I feel your pain.

Chat soon,

ISLE OF WIGHT: FESTIVAL WARDROBE

As if you haven’t already seen me banging on about it enough on social media, this little post is my way of reminding myself that I’m gonna be lucky enough to travel across to the Isle of Wight with summer with 4 of my best friends. IOW will be my first proper camping festival and although I’ve heard horror stories of mudslides, NO PHONE BATTERY and drunk men pissing on tents, I’m still pretty excited. (Understatement of the century.)

Fleetwood Mac have been one of the bands I’ve listened to consistently throughout my life. My dad named me after ‘Sara’ (and after the Thin Lizzie song by the same name,) and they’ve always been in the background of my upbringing. I am literally ecstatic at the prospect of seeing them play live, and I’m SO looking forward to seeing the beautiful Jessie Ware, James Bay and Kool and the Gang too.

It’s set to be an amazing 4 days and I’m going to need the wardrobe to match, so I’ve been spending a lot of time scanning the interwebz to grab myself some sartorial bargains. I'm a big, big fan of the seventies trend despite my usual goth-like dress sense, and plan to rock a flare if I can manage it. Topshop, as always, have come out on top and I daresay a few of these pieces will be sneaking their way into my rucksack.

Fingers crossed for good weather, and I’ll let you know how it all goes,

POOLS TO BATHE IN

Bomber Jacket – H&M | Top (actually a dress) – Motel Rocks | Trousers – Zara | Shoes – Zara | Ring – Brandy Melville | Bag – Topshop | Earrings – Claires, Topshop, Market

I’m back with another outfit post this sunny season with what I think is the perfect summer transition outfit (not that I’m biased or anything.) I don’t know about you, but it’s an all too regular occurrence that I exit the house warmly wrapped up in my trusty Topshop duster coat before realising ten minutes into my walk to Uni that it is actually a trillion degrees outside and I’m going to have to face the fact that melting to my death is inevitable.
I’m putting my foot down once and for all and have decided that this little black Bomber jacket from Zara is my new BFF. Lightweight but perfectly tough, it’s saved me from many an awkward outfit ordeal. I’ve also decided to wear this Motel Rocks stripy Breton dress as a top because it is quite frankly indecent. I’m not sure if it’s my lacklustre washing skills or if I’m having a spontaneous growth spurt at the age of 20, but it is impossible to wear this without two pairs of tights and a very long coat.
Apart from wrestling with many an outfit dilemma, I’ve been interning with a very exciting (but still top secret) fashion experience soon to hit Newcastle, attending a James Bay gig and less glamorously, pretty much living in the library. Top of my libes playlist has been new artist The Japanese House, real name Amber Bain, who has surfaced from the depths of London with a collection of extremely addictive songs under her belt. Have a listen to Pools to Bathe In, one of my personal faves.

ME, MY FLARES AND I

It’s a widely acknowledged fact amongst those that know me ‘IRL’ that I am the Queen of the skinny jean. I wear my fave black pair almost every day, and they are the saviour of many a crap outfit. They’re classic, flattering, and go with literally everything. So imagine my shock and surpise when in the midst of Brandy Melville, facing a mannequin adorned in a pair of flowery flares, my heart begins to beat faster and that all too familiar ‘oh my gosh I need them now’ feeling sweeps its way from head to toe.

After rushing to the changing room to try them on, I’d fallen head over heels. These flares are possibly the comfiest item of clothing I own, and are indescribably nice to chuck on after a lifetime of jumping, hopping and zipping myself into my beloved Joni’s. If you’re thinking of investing in the 70’s trend which is set to rule Spring/Summer 2015, I’d definitely encourage you to have a little look into some trews like these. They’re floaty, flattering and to be honest, anything which makes me look marginally more Coachella are fab in my book. The moral of the story here – flares are friends.

Are you a fan of the wide-legged trouser or are these ones enough to give you night-flares? (Sorry, that was terrible)
Do let me know in the comments!
